RAL Classic Range
The RAL colour range was established 90 years ago and consists of nearly 2000 possible colours/colour combinations. RAL stands for ReichsAusschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherun (Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance). Architectural, construction and other sectors widely adopt the RAL colour range. Interpon Powder coatings are one provider for the RAL Range.
- Yello based shades use RAL 1xxx, approximately 50 colours.
- Orange-based shades use RAL 2xxx, approximately 14 colours.
- Red-based shades use RAL 3xxx, approximately 34 colours.
- Violet-based shadesRAL 4xxx, approximately 12 colours.
- Blue-based shades use RAL 5xxx, approximately 25 colours.
- Green-based shades use RAL 6xxx, approximately 36 colours.
- Grey-based shades use RAL 7xxx, approximately 38 colours.
- Brown-based shades use RAL 8xxx, approximately 20 colours.
- White, as well as Black-based shades, use RAL 9xxx, approximately 14 colours.
Therefore, ordering a RAL shade requires the RAL reference as well as the colour description. Additionally, you need to advise whether colour is matt, satin or gloss. Importantly if we are painting for an existing contract using the same powder manufacturer helps with colour consistency and is recommended for ongoing work.
Syntha Pulvin Shades.
The global Syntha Pulvin name provides premier coatings for architectural use. All Syntha Pulvin powders get widely used in the UK in major construction and renovation products. Buildings such as schools, hospitals, office buildings and universities come specified with Syntha Pulvin colours.
Syntha Pulvin colours use a more extended coding system, such as , ‘Syntha Pulvin Merlin GreyM4L0456’ and is based on eight colour bases across both Syntha Pulvin standard, made-to-order and colour collection ranges.

NCS Colour System
NCS stands for Natural Colour System and originates from Sweden. The NCS colour codes come structured on a ‘human perception’ basis . Moreover, NCS colours use the four chromatic elementary colours; yellow (Y), red (R), blue (B) and green (G), and the two non-chromatic primary colours being white (W)and black (S). The Codes for the colours are longer and more complex to identify using darkness, saturation and an identification of the primary colours. For example,
- NCS 1075-Y20R:
- 1075 = 10% dark, 75%, Saturation, Y = Yellow, 20% = Red.
- Over 1000 colour combination are available using the NCS colour system.
BS 4800 Colour System
The British Standards colour system (BS4800) contains over 350 different colours, widely used set for the construction industry. Two ranges exist.
- BS5252 standard covering framework for colour coordination for building purposes.
- BS4800 standard schedule of paint colours for building purposes.
The BS4800 colour system is used for construction, architecture, fenestration and decoration. You will find The British Standard BS 4800 is also used when specifying paint colours for building refurbishment, particularly with local authority work and the construction of infrastructure buildings such as airports or hospitals.
The colour codes are typically BS 08 B 29 Satin as an example.
